Managing E-lists
From the TechTalk column of PawPrint
By Leslie Intemann
Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) currently hosts more than 3000 mailing lists for approximately 400,000 subscribers. If you're one of thousands of list administrators, the way you’ll manage your lists (for example, how you’ll add people to and delete people from a list) is getting better, easier—and yes, different. The way people join and leave lists will also change. That’s because CIT has been upgrading its list management software from ListProc to Lyris, and the migration is gaining speed.
A list administrator is the person (and there may be many associated with your list) who handles at least some of the aspects of operating a list. What’s the most important thing a list administrator can do? Stay in touch with your list owner –the person primarily responsible for the operation of your list—to find out when your list is migrating from ListProc to Lyris. Why? Because after your list migrates, the old commands won’t work.
Unlike ListProc, Lyris lets e-list administrators work with their lists either by sending commands in e-mail messages or through a web interface. For specific information about logging in, managing members, sending an announcement, and more, visit www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/elist/lyris/admin-web.html.
