Authenticated SMTP - It's now or never!

By Leslie Intemann

From the TechTalk column in PawPrint

If, over the course of the next few days, you are one of 10,000 people who receive the following e-mail from CIT Messaging Services, I advise you to pay attention and take action. If you don't, your e-mail will stop working. Seriously.

Dear Ezra,

You are receiving this message because you recently sent e-mail using a method that is being phased out. (Be assured that CIT does not monitor the content of your e-mail; we only know that it was sent a particular way.)

You need to change a setting in your e-mail configuration, or, starting February 1, you will not be able to send messages. The sooner you make these changes, the sooner you'll stop receiving messages like this one! Instructions for updating your settings can be found at www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/email/smtp/.

If a technical support person in your department takes care of your computer, please consult with them before making this change. Please call the CIT Contact Center (HelpDesk) at 255-8990 or send e-mail to helpdesk@cornell.edu if you need assistance.

The change involves sending messages in a way that verifies who you are (through your NetID and password). This helps ensure that your computer is not being used to send messages without your knowledge or permission. You can find details at the web address listed above.

Thanks for your help. CIT Messaging Services
